Problem
On a client call, while switching tabs, a sensitive page flashed on shared screen for a second. That is enough. We trust ourselves to remember which tabs are safe, to close banking or admin tools before a meeting, to lock the laptop before walking away. We forget.
Idea
Give sensitive tabs a vault. Lock them automatically. Unlock them only when you mean to. The product should feel like locking a drawer — not installing a security suite.
Role
I am building SiteVault as an indie product: the problem, the interaction model, and the extension architecture around locking, unlocking and staying out of the way until it matters.
Architecture / engineering
The extension watches the tabs you choose to protect. When the vault locks — by idle time, by leaving the machine, or by intent — those tabs are no longer casually visible. Unlocking is a deliberate action. Sensitive state is treated as something to protect, not something to cache loosely.
Technology
A browser extension focused on tab protection, automatic locking and encrypted access. The design constraint is simple: security that people will actually leave on.
Challenges
Security products fail when they are annoying. If locking is noisy, people disable it. If unlocking is slow, they stop protecting tabs. The product has to be strict about protection and generous about getting back to work.
Solution
Protect the tab, not the entire browser. Auto-lock when attention leaves. Make unlock fast and intentional. Keep the interface small so the vault feels like a habit, not a chore.
Result
SiteVault is an indie product in motion — built from a real embarrassment and aimed at a real habit: sharing a screen, switching a tab, and realizing too late what was open.
What I learned
The best security products come from a moment you never want to repeat. Design for that second, then make the rest of the day feel normal.
